Pitch Pine Vs Pine
Pitch Pine is originally from the Northeastern part of the United States. Its heartwood colour is reddish-brown but the most common part, which is used for building, is the sapwood which is yellowish-white. The grain is usually straight and is sold interchangeably with other species of Pine, as it has limited availability.
Pine is a softwood which is from a variety of locations in the Northern Hemisphere. It is relatively soft and easy to work with, making it a very popular wood to build with. The colours are very similar to that of Pitch Pine, however the grain is much closer together.
Pitch Pine is simply a variation of Pine which has slightly different properties. it is much less common than regular Pine but only a trained eye can really tell the difference.
How To Spot The Difference
Here are a few ways you tell the difference between Pitch Pine Floorboards and Pine Flooring:
- Pitch Pine straight grain lines are usually much thicker than regular Pine.
- Pitch Pine will usually have much fewer dents than regular Pine as it is much more hard-wearing.
- Pitch Pine trees grow in very low nutrient soils.
There are only very few differences between Pitch Pine and Pine. However, Pitch Pine often results in a much higher quality floorboard that has a much more attractive grain structure and pattern. This is what makes Pitch Pine Floorboards much more desirable, along with the limited availability of the material.
