Why Do Floorboards Squeak?

- Insert Thin Pieces of Wood into Gaps: If you have access to the underside of your floorboards, such as through a basement or crawl space, this method can be highly effective. Have someone upstairs walk over the squeaky area while you are below to identify the exact location of the gap. Once you locate it, insert thin pieces of wood, commonly known as shims, into the gaps and glue them in place. Ensure you do not force the wood in too much, as this can create an unsightly bump on the floor above.
- Fill Long Gaps with High-Quality Adhesive: For longer gaps that run along the floorboards, high-quality wood adhesive can be a practical solution. Carefully apply the adhesive into the gaps and allow it to harden fully. This process will fill the space, preventing the boards from moving against each other and thereby silencing the squeaks.
- Sprinkling Talcum Powder: If you do not have access to the underside of your floorboards, you will need to address the issue from above. Sprinkle talcum powder into the joints between the floorboards, ensuring it penetrates deeply into the gaps. Walk back and forth over the area to help the powder settle in. The talcum powder acts as a lubricant, reducing the friction between the boards and effectively eliminating the squeak.
